Following our authority does not mean we're negating the mind

When we first learn about Human Design, Strategy and Authority can sometimes sound like the holy grail of alignment in the decision making process.

But here’s the thing, following our authority does not mean we’re negating the mind. I often see the mind being villainized in Human Design.

The whole point of these strategies is to follow that inner cue on what we physically have energy for as opposed to what the mind wants to do. Because let’s be frank here, the mind wants to do all the things and has an agenda of its own.

Strategy and Authority can help us discern between that mental chatter noise as we tune into our mechanics.

Now, that doesn’t mean that the mind is bad. In fact, when we start doing the inner work, parts work in therapy, it’s never about shutting the mind off or pushing logic out the window. It’s about holding space for the mind while building capacity to feel our feelings, tap into our intuition, notice the cues of our body’s wisdom.

It’s training the mind to notice, to be aware but not take over. To be an observer and not the driver. So it doesn’t overanalyze nor override those intuitive, sacral, emotional, physical cues & authority hits.

We need our beautiful minds; we need those fears and logic so that we can continue to evolve, our reflections and pattern recognition to heal and frankly stay alive. But before the mind can take a step back from decision making, we need to build safety and trust in our bodies and ourselves.

The mind tries to take over because it believes it has to. When there is no trust, no foundation for the mind to let go, why would it?

Information to soothe the mind

I think that’s one of the many reasons I’ve found learning about my chart and its mechanics be helpful. It’s given something for my mind to chew on, to process and test out.

It became easier to surrender, to let go once my mind was at ease. Reflecting on past experiences of when I followed my intuition vs. the times I lead with my mind yet my body was exhausted. It’s helped me see all the ways I used to push and over-extended myself.

And then little by little, my mind’s able to step back. It’s still a work in progress but it’s helped me orient myself in a much more sustainable, aligned way specially knowing that I amplify a lot (7 centers undefined, baby!) and can be prone to burnout when I negate my physicals cues.

Integration through embodiment and self-care practices

Now, my mind and body are so much better at communicating and working together. That’s one of the many motivations behind building Human Design Fundamentals, because it’ll give your mind something to chew on while also providing tools, mindset shifts to sensitize to your body’s needs, your authority & energetic themes.

This is my approach in sharing, teaching and guiding with Human Design. I’m not going to just throw information at you.

Let’s look at the why behind how we are, why we do what we do and be curious.

Come join us at HD Fundamentals if you’re feeling the pulled to have more conversations like these in a community setting. Live discussions this round, March 2025! With over 5+ hours of learning content and worksheets.

Some reflections to leave you with:

  • If you have an Emotional authority, are you good at feeling or recognizing your feelings? Sometimes the mind has a tendency to solve, to make sense of the lessons and feelings while you’re riding the wave but the energy is meant to only witness + support. Intellectualizing can interrupt that process.
  • If you’re Sacral authority, how do you sensitize to your body’s cues? Sometimes the mind gets caught up in everything it needs to do + should that it overrides the actual body’s needs.
  • If you’re Splenic authority, is it easy for you to trust your intuitive hits? Or does the mind kick in trying to reason or distill those feelings?
  • If you’re Ego authority, does your mind talk yourself out of your desires because they might seem too far reached? Does your mind try to justify what you want?
  • If you’re Self-projected authority, do you edit what you say? Are you filtering your words or you’re letting it flow freely? Does your mind judge what comes out or are you able to tune into your body’s resonance to your words?
  • If you’re Environmental authority (mental projectors), do you have outlets to release that mental energy often? What places or people can you freely soundboard with? What comes back when you’re able to reflect openly and freely?
  • If you’re Lunar authority, what helps you come back to yourself? What practices help you find consistency and grounding? Or does the mind override your own needs to fit in & pressure to catch up with the rest of the world?

Further reflection prompts:

  • How does your mind currently support you?
  • Do you have a defined or undefined mind? How does that show up for you? How does it influence the people around you?
  • How do you tend to your mental energy currently? What do you think it needs?
