A space for the messy, beautiful process of coming home to ourselves

When the Story That Saved You Becomes the Story You Outgrow

When the Story That Saved You Becomes the Story You Outgrow

What happens when we outgrow who we've been?

When the story that saved you becomes the story you outgrow, a reflection on identity, releasing, and the path of self-leadership

I’ve been reflecting a lot on self-leadership lately, perhaps also influenced by the current Human Design Gate 7 Sun transit.

Not the traditional kind of leadership we’re often taught to aspire to; you know, the loudest or most eloquent person in the room, the one with all the answers, the person who has everything figured out and never falters.

I’m more interested in the quieter, behind-the-scenes kind of leadership. The kind that emerges from within.

Gate 7 has always fascinated me because it speaks to the role of the self within the collective. It reminds us that true leadership isn’t about forcing direction or convincing others to follow. It’s about becoming so clear in ourselves that our direction naturally creates movement.

And lately, I’ve been thinking about what it actually takes to cultivate that kind of clarity.

Quieting the noise

Lately, I’ve been prioritizing ways to quiet the noise in my life so that I can listen more deeply for what is actually mine to carry forward.

My brain had way too many tabs open. 😂 It wasn’t just the distractions of mindless scrolling. It was the constant consumption: collecting ideas, learning, searching for the next piece of inspiration, subscribing to a gazillion business newsletters, and taking in advice from every direction.

None of these things are inherently bad. Don’t get me wrong, I love learning, and curiosity is a huge part of who I am but I realized I had reached a point where I was consuming more than I was integrating. I was gathering more inputs when what I really needed was more space to implement, experiment, and trust what I already knew.

So this season has been less about adding more and more, and more about simplifying, clearing out the tabs, and creating structures that allow me to actually bring things to life.

And a big part of that process has been shedding identities.

There are certain stories we hold onto because they once helped us make sense of ourselves.

The identities we outgrow

For a while, I was “the girl who burned out and left corporate.”And let’s be honest, it was a pretty catchy identity… It was a powerful phase. It marked a turning point in my life and opened the door to this profound work.

But somewhere along the way, I realized I was still carrying parts of that identity that no longer belonged to this phase of my life.

Because yes, I experienced burnout. Yes, I walked away from a path that wasn’t aligned, and for a while, my whole identity revolved around healing. But that isn’t the entirety of who I am.

And the same goes for the stories we carry about our limitations.

When our old stories stop serving us

Gate 48 has also been such a powerful teacher for me here: the fear of not being enough, not knowing enough, not having enough depth.

That fear shaped so much of the beginning of my career. It pushed me to learn, study, prepare, and become good at what I do. It also nudged me to look more deeply at my own beliefs, generational patterns, and some of the inherited fears I carried as a child of immigrants.

But it no longer defines me.

Okay, maybe that fear won’t truly disappear. But it doesn’t control or paralyze me anymore. And that distinction matters.

We don’t necessarily have to eradicate every part of ourselves that has challenged us. We don’t have to get obsessive about fixing ourselves or get stuck in the hamster wheel of healing.

Sometimes we simply stop allowing something to lead. Sometimes we allow our attention to move elsewhere.

That’s led me to reflect on how often we outgrow roles, structures, and versions of ourselves, but don’t always consciously release them.

And when we don’t prune what has already finished, we end up carrying around so much extra noise and weight. Old expectations. Old obligations. Old desires. And, of course, the shoulds. Oh, the shoulds.

Even old versions of ourselves that we keep trying to prove.

The importance of pruning

It’s like a garden that hasn’t been properly tended to in years. The growth is still there, but so are the weeds, the dead branches, and the things taking energy without giving anything back.

Recently, I released the pressure to constantly produce, especially around creating new Gate content on social media simply because it was something I had done for the past few years.

And my gosh, I’ve found so much more room for inspiration and the sassy hot takes that have been waiting to come through.

It feels like I can finally hear myself again.

Sometimes leadership is less about adding more and more…(I almost drank that Kool-Aid myself.) And more about knowing what needs to be released.

So that what remains has room to actually take root and grow. I think this is an important part of self-leadership that we don’t always talk about.

Leadership isn’t only about deciding where you’re going or figuring out what you need to do next.

Sometimes it’s about discerning what no longer belongs in the future you’re creating.

What are you here to lead?

As I move into this next season, I’m asking myself:

  • What am I truly here to lead?
  • What structures, identities, or stories have I outgrown?
  • What becomes possible when I stop leading from who I was and start leading from who I am becoming?

Perhaps self-leadership is about standing rooted enough in ourselves that we can walk alongside others with clarity.

Not because we have everything figured out or because we’ve finally become some perfectly healed, fully realized version of ourselves but because we’re willing to keep listening, releasing, and responding to what is actually ours to carry forward.

And maybe that’s the kind of leadership I’m most interested in cultivating now.

If this stirred something in you, I’d love to hear from you: What identity, role, or story are you currently outgrowing?
