I was a late bloomer compared to the other girls in my class, I didn’t get my period until I was almost 15. For years I’ve witnessed girlfriends hunched and fold over in pain, passing out, heading to the infirmary during that time of the month. So you’ve probably guesses it, I was pretty prepared–and frankly terrified–for when my time came.
I didn’t know what to do. First of all, there’s so much myth and mystery around this topic when it shouldn’t have. Secondly, I noticed the layers of shame and embarrassment hidden underneath the menstruation discourse. Like seriously, why do we talk about periods like it’s Voldemort?! She who must not be named 🤷🏻♀️
I found it weird I knew more about male ejaculations (thanks sex ed) than the female period. I didn’t even know about discharge! You know, I was tempted to include a TMI warning somewhere but you know what, let’s normalize and reclaim conversations about the female body. It’s time to take our power back.
Our female bodies are divine; it’s wise, it’s intuitive and so friggin’ smart. Menstrual pain happens to a lot of us but it’s usually a sign of some sort of blocked energy. That something is out of balance.
My podcast guest today is a reproductive health herbalist and traditional medicine practitioner. She went through years of undiagnosed endometriosis. Her periods would knock her out for days in writhing pain until she started looking at the pain from a different perspective: what was her body trying to tell her?
Raven Rose is a reproductive health herbalist and traditional medicine practitioner. She studied women’s Herbalism and traditional healing practices in Denver, Colorado, the Yucatán, and the Peruvian Amazon. In her journey, Raven was able to overcome debilitating period pain through embracing her cyclical body, restoring ancestral wisdom, and connection to nature. Through her work she helps others bring balance to their cyclical bodies through connection with plants, ancestral guides, and grounded spiritual practice.
You will learn so much about your menstrual health and many additional nuggets of wisdom!
